Everyone is familiar with the halftime show at high school football games. The marching band that plays Johnny B. Goode. The flag girls that whip around the school colors. The twirlers that spin their batons in an unbelievable fashion.
What most people don’t realize, though, is that those twirlers’ skills extend beyond entertaining football fans at halftime.
In the spring, when football is over, that’s when the real season for twirlers begins.
Twirlers take to their respective clubs, and begin training for competitions later in the spring and summer.
Mickey’s Majorettes is one of those clubs that trains local twirlers. Located in The Woodlands, Mickey’s Majorettes has produced twirlers that have won regional, state and national championships since Patti Mickey opened shop in 1992.
Some of the girls in Mickey’s Majorettes are coached by Mickey at College Park High School, while others are from the Kingwood and Klein school districts. Two girls have graduated and are twirling collegiately.
After being a feature twirler 2010-11, Hannah Dziuk is twirling at Texas State University, and Mickey’s daughter Kayli Mickey twirls at Southern Methodist University after being a feature twirler from 2008-11.
Mickey’s Majorettes is coming off of the Texas National Baton Twirling Association State Twirling Championships in San Antonio June 25-27, where four twirlers qualified for the America Youth on Parade Twirling National Championships at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind., next week.
“The state championships went wonderfully for us. Our girls placed in all of the events they were in and our oldest girl (Kayli Mickey) won College Miss Majorette of Texas,” Mickey said. “These girls put in so much work — 2-3 hours a day normally, but 5-6 a day when training for competitions — so I knew they’d do well. They practiced hard, pushed each other, and put in the work to do well.”
Of the four girls that qualified for the national championships, 15-year old Kristen Baker will be the only one to make the trip to Notre Dame.
“All of the girls did great to qualify for nationals, but not all can go for various reasons. Kristen should do well while up there, though,” Mickey said. “It’s difficult to know what’ll happen — everyone’s good once you get to that level, so it’s about who’s having the best day. But Kristen has the routine, the work ethic and technique to be successful up there.”
Thank you David Arno for your time and article.
